Cellulite can be defined as an occurrence of visually unacceptable blobs and dents on the skin of certain body parts, which have orange-skin-like structure. Structurally, cellulite is made of fat deposits which most often appear on the hips, thighs and buttocks.
Cellulite is one of the most common esthetic problems in women and it shouldn’t be mixed with obesity. Sometimes, cellulite can be even more visible in the skin structure with a loss of a certain number of kilograms. Statistic data says that 80% of women older than 20, regardless of their weight or size, has cellulite problems.
Cellulite is an extremely complex problem which in its creation includes microcirculation and lymphatics, a swelling of the extracellular matrix and presence of subcutaneous fatty tissue which includes certain parts of the dermis. Differences in architecture of fibrous septae that surround the fatty tissue have recently been shown in women with cellulite and in men.
In short, the connective tissue of the skin surrounds the fatty cells that can be found in certain chambers. Edges of these chambers contain septae. In time, the fatty cells are getting larger in number and in size. This phenomena together with accumulation of the localized edema pulls the surface of the skin between the septae which leads to the appearance of blobs and dents which can be seen on the cellulite affected skin.
