Laser treatment for acne scars
Numerous treatments exist to deal with acne, both local and systemic therapy, but red scars from acne are still a large therapeutic problem. Post-inflammatory redness which is present after the acne are inflamed can last long, up to 12 or more months in some patients.
Candela Vbeam laser (PDL – Pulsed Dye Laser 595nm) is the latest in treatment technology for various vascular lesions: rosacea, enlarged capillaries and redness after the acne treatment. Laser treatment of red scars from acne is completely comfortable. No special preparation is necessary for the treatment. All patients can be treated, no matter how long the post-inflammatory redness is present and which therapy you are currently using.
During the treatment the laser beam passes through the skin and gets absorbed by the oxyhemoglobin in the tissue, which results in withdrawal of the redness. After the treatment more intense redness and a mild swelling can appear, lasting 3-4 days. Laser treatments are done every 3 weeks and 3-4 treatments are necessary. In 30-50% of the patients the red stains retreat after the first treatment. After 3-4 treatments the redness retreats completely in about 75-90% of the patients, depending on the scar type and skin problematics.
To achieve better results in the treatment of red stains from acne and improve skin structure it is advisable to combine laser treatments with chemical peels depending on the type of scars and skin problems.
VBeam laser can also treat keloid and hypertrophic scars that occur after acne or surgery. By using the laser beam, the central layer of the skin is heated and in that way circulation and production of new collagen is stimulated, skin structure is improved and redness is diminished.
It is necessary to perform 3-4 treatments in 3 week intervals. In more prominent keloid scars, a combination of laser treatment and intralesional injections of corticosteroids can be performed.
